RI Reference Price for Coal in January 2019 Declines

LensaAktual. Reference Coal Price (HBA) is still continuing the downward trend. The government set a January 2019 HBA of US $ 92.41 per ton, or slightly lower than last month which was set at US $ 92.51 per barrel.
This is stated in the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Decree 01 K / 30 / MEM / 2019 regarding Reference Metal Mineral Prices and HBAs for January 2019.

For information, HBA is a price obtained from the average index of the Indonesia Coal Index (ICI), the Newcastle Export Index (NEX), the Globalcoal Newcastle Index (GCNC) and Platts's 5900 in the previous month. Quality is equal to 6332 kcal per kilogram (kg) GAR, 0.8 percent total sulfur, 8 percent total humidity and 15 percent ash.

The Head of the Communication, Public Information Services and Cooperation Ministry of the Supreme Private Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources revealed that coal prices declined because China's coal imports were limited, while demand for other countries was relatively normal.
"HBA dropped because of restrictions on imports (coal) of China," Agung said Thursday (1/3).

Separately, Executive Director of the Indonesian Coal Mining Association (APBI) Hendra Sinadia said that China's import restrictions have a major impact on world coal demand, especially low-calorie coal. In the end, impact on price formation. As is known, China is the largest coal consumer in the world.

"Most of our exports go to China. From our exports to China, most of them are low calorie coal," Hendra said.

According to Hendra, the impact of the price decline on each company is different. The company's financial performance that produces high calorie coal is relatively more maintained. Meanwhile, companies that produce low-calorie coal are actually tight.

One of the ways companies face the trend of falling prices is to make cost-efficient. Thus, the company can maintain its business margin.

"With the price decline, the operating margin is getting thinner," he said.

Furthermore, Hendra estimates that the coal market next month will continue to decline considering the Lunar New Year will be celebrated next year.

"Usually, China will take a one-two-week holiday in the Chinese New Year," he said.
The downward trend in coal prices has occurred since September 2018 where the HBA was set at US $ 104.81 per ton, down from the August HBA of US $ 107.83 per ton.

Then, the decline continued in October which slipped to US $ 100.89 per ton and November US $ 97.90 per ton.
